How Sustainability Education Influences Consumption and Production Systems and Contributes to Achieving Sustainable Development Goals
The consumption and production systems impact economies, the environment, and societies significantly worldwide and in all sectors. Apart from the significant environmental degradation, the high levels of resource use and the waste and pollution associated with both production and consumption phases of the lifecycle, including resource extraction, the production of intermediate inputs, distribution, marketing, use, waste disposal and re-use of products and services are paralleled by inefficient, polluting, and ultimately costly phases of development. These vary from the traditional decision-making and policies to scarcity, volatility, and pricing levels unaffordable for our economy’s manufacturing base. Impacts of consumption and production patterns reflect the ability of many economies and societies to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Based on the perceived need to drive markets in the direction of innovation and sustainability, thereby enabling the transition to a green economy, The special issue “The role of Education and UN Sustainable Development Goals – How Sustainability Education influence consumption and production systems and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals” is proposed as part of the journal “Discover Sustainability”.
The Topical Collection has two main focuses. Firstly, it welcomes submissions based on scholarly research, analyses, and reflections on how sustainability education affects consumption and production systems. Secondly, it invites scholars to introduce and discuss innovations, tools, and instruments to evaluate teaching and learning and pedagogical approaches, different disciplinary practices that can be integrated to deliver transdisciplinarity education, transition design research framework – from research to practice and practice to research, collaborative research, transnational research, and the mechanisms of systems that are external to the education system but are related to, the role of career counselling for the marginalised communities as a socio-economic and environmental mechanism for challenging and transforming current education inequality for sustainable development in the context of climate change, covid19, 4IR, and SDG’s, all in context of how we can harness innovation in Sustainability Education, and overcome the challenges of sustainable consumption and production, in a way that the achievement of the SDGs is not compromised. There is a vast awareness that through effective collaboration and communication and sharing experiences and insights, the world may be better able to cope with real-world challenges.

Dr. Renuka Thakore is a sustainability expert having comprehensive experience across business and academia. She has built strong delivery teams on international programme to enhance understanding of learning, leadership and change in organizations. She connects the Global South and Global North through her innovative, transparent, inclusive, and transdisciplinary global digital research-intensive platform.
Dr. Adhikari's research interest lies in integrating sustainability dimensions into engineering, thus building a sustainable and resilient society while using appropriate ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. His major research projects includes water sustainability via reclamation and reuse, climate-smart agriculture, optimization techniques for water resources management, food-energy-water nexus, and materials sustainability, among others. As a faculty in the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering at Humboldt State University, he looks forward to continuing his sustainability efforts via research, teaching and global engagement
Dr. Isa Elegbede has a PhD on Environmental Sciences (Sustainability science) from the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU), Cottbus, Germany, a M.Sc. on Environmental and Resource Management (ERM) from the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU), Cottbus, Germany, a M.Sc. on Marine Sciences (Marine Pollution and Management) from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria, and a B.Sc. (Hons) Fisheries and Aquatic Biology from the Lagos State University, Ojo, Nigeria. He was was a Visiting Graduate Scholar at the School for Resource and Environmental Studies & College of Sustainability Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Dr. Mahwish Ali is Assistant Professor at the Department of Biological Science, National University of Medical Sciences. Her teaching and research interests include sustainable and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment solutions, as well as new recycling approaches utilizing biotechnological techniques. Her current research focuses on industrial wastewater treatment and impacts of climate change on environment and human life.
Dr. Ewa Duda, PhD in Social Sciences, works as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Education, the Maria Grzegorzewska University, Poland. Her research focused on Education for Sustainable Development, environmental education. She is involved in research projects aimed at promoting environmentally friendly behaviour, social change towards sustainability transitions. She is a Member of Committee on Education Science (Polish Academy of Sciences) and European Society of Research on the Education of Adults.
Drs. Jos Eussen, CFO and CEO of a social entrepreneur, leading the RCE Rhine-Meuse, the first of 174 regions worldwide binding together the knowledge and action of industry, education, science, regional governments and societal institutions for the realization of ‘Education for Sustainable Development’. Working on ‘The OPEDUCA Project’, he realized the work on transiting formal education towards transdisciplinary learning, a learning process throughout and beyond formal learning, continuing learning in future with direct cooperation with industry and other partners, and sharing knowledge in the own regional community and beyond.
Editor-in-Chief Professor Walter Leal Filho (BSc, PhD, DSc, DPhil, DL DEd) is the founding director of the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR) and of the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP), holding professorial posts at the Hamburg University of Applied Science (Germany) and Manchester Metropolitan University (UK).
Professor Leal Filho has over 30 years’ editorial experience, and in excess of 500 publications to his credit.
